Age: 40-49
Nita
breast cancer
stage one
At age 43 I was diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in two
quadrants of my left breast. My breast surgeon suggested a mastectomy
with immediate reconstruction (tram flap) and a sentinal node biopsy.
The operation was nine weeks ago and, by the grace of God, I am cancer
free.
The sentinal node was clear, indicating my cancer had been contained.
I tell everyone to get a mammogram. I am doing well because the cancer
was found so early. Since it did not spread, I was spared chemo. I did
not feel sick or symptomatic. I felt strong and positive and optimistic.
My OB/Gyn was very astute and detected the microcalicifications on my
routine mammogram. After I went back for magnifications, he sent me to
a breast surgeon. I had a stereotactic biopsy.
I feel blessed because I have good doctors, an understanding boss at
work, a supportive family, and friends who have been angels on earth to
me.
I kept myself very busy while waiting for each test result, so I wouldn't
dwell on the negative. I checked the Internet for information when I was
in a fact finding mood. I used the mathematical percentages to comfort
myself (i.g. 80% of all biopsies are negative, etc.) and I took along
my best girlfriend to the doctor's office for support and laughter. Never
underestimate the power of endorphins!
I'm not 100% yet, but I will be. Having the availability of other women
through chats, boards, etc. was incredibly comforting.
That's why I wanted to post, that I might give a little back to the community
I am now a member of.
The ability for the body to heal is amazing, if not downright miraculous.
Having faith and a positive attitude helped me enormously. I'd like to
offer hope for my sisters who face a similar situation.
