50-59
breast cancer
stage one

In November 1999 I felt great, but went for my annual exam. Two days later my Doctor called to refer me to a breast center. I had trouble with non-cancerous tumors and fibercystic disease for years. The radiologist at the breast center did a enlarged mamo and told me I needed to see a surgeon.

Two hours later I was in her office making arrangements for a biopsy the next day. She told she would call me within 24 hrs. She called the next day and said her pathologist was stumped and she wanted to send it to Nashville to the man who wrote the book on it. Three days later she told me I had carcinoma in situ. They had found it very early. We went to her office for discussion and I wanted both my breasts removed with reconstructive. I left her office went to the plastic surgeon office and we set the date. The most horrible thing through all this was the dread of telling my children. Both grown and married with children. My biggest fear was and is that the cancer will show up somewhere else.

I did not have to have chemotherapy or radiation. It is a long surgery and painful and we finally did the last surgery 5 months after the removal.

But I am comfortable that I will never have cancer in that area again. It has been sixteen months now and I went through a lot of depression. My scars are getting lighter, my depression is mostly gone. Now I just thank God for a very supportive husband and thank God for my life.
