THE GILLETTE COMPANY'S COMMITMENT TO WOMEN'S CANCERS
Boston, MA - Research shows women receive much clinical and medical support when diagnosed and living with cancer, but lack adequate emotional and social support during the cancer journey. In 1996, The Gillette Company demonstrated its commitment to women's cancers through the creation of The Gillette Centers for Women's Cancers. This commitment to cancer has expanded to include The Gillette Women's Cancer Connection (www.gillettecancerconnect.org). Since 1996, these initiatives have touched thousands of women through a novel approach that underscores the importance of emotional and social support for women diagnosed with cancer. See How Cancer Treatment Has Changed in the Past 20 Years: Emotional and Social Support as Part of a Doctor's Prescription. A note from Dr. Ross Berkowitz, co-director of The Gillette Center's for Women's Cancer and director of gynecologic oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.
The Gillette Centers for Women's Cancers
The Gillette Centers were conceived in 1996 when The Gillette Company entered into a strategic partnership with Dana-Farber/Partners Cancer Care for the treatment of breast and gynecologic cancers. The Gillette Company awarded a $5 million gift to the Women's Cancers Programs of Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, which helped to establish The Gillette Centers for Women's Cancers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital. The gift underwrites basic research and innovative clinical therapies for early detection, prevention and cure of cancers.
Over the past five years, The Gillette Centers have grown immensely. They offer a unique type of cancer care that coordinates each woman's care through a variety of specialists who are all located in one place. This holistic approach is patient-focused and considers the needs of the entire family.
The Gillette Centers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital embody emotional wellness and Gillette's commitment to women's cancers through all-inclusive facilities that cater to the needs of women. The Gillette Centers focus is not just treatment of the disease, but the whole woman, from her fertility, sexuality, and self-esteem to her multiple roles as partner, mother, daughter, friend, employee, and community member. The Gillette Centers also assist the families of women with cancer by providing support groups for guidance and understanding.
At The Gillette Centers for Women's Cancers, a special boutique offers a wide variety of personal care products and services, such as make-up consultation, fittings for prosthetic devices, and wigs. Women can also purchase hats and scarves, clothing, and accessories, as well as educational materials. The Gillette Centers for Women's Cancers are designed to meet patients' needs for privacy, comfort, and convenience, down to the smallest detail.
The Gillette Women's Cancer Connection
The Gillette Centers support of women's cancers has grown through another Gillette initiative, the Gillette Women's Cancer Connection.
In 1998, The Gillette Company decided to bring the concept of emotional wellness to those outside the Boston-area through the creation of a Web site. This program connects women living with cancer, their families and their friends with access to people and resources to ease the journey through treatment into recovery. The program's focus is on emotional wellness. By logging on to the Web site at gillettecancerconnect.org, women and their families can get emotional support through reading about other people's experiences and accessing information from a variety of sources. The site also offers a listing of support groups around the country.
